We spoke with Dom Stead, co-owner of Sporting Feet. He tells us how he and Geoff came to set up their business in Putney and what Putney means to him!
Introduce yourself, your business and why you chose Putney?
Hi I’m Dom Stead, joint owner of Sporting Feet. We are an independent sports footwear retailer.
I own the business with Geoff Ross. We met studying Marketing at Lancaster University in the mid 1980s and always thought we might start a business together. That became a reality in June 2011 when we opened Sporting Feet Putney. We also have a store in Richmond and a fully transactional website.
We chose Putney because we knew there was a strong sporting community here and lots of good local schools too. So we thought our concept would work well.
We are both really proud that we have built up a business that has so many loyal customers. They value our knowledge and expertise and know that we always go the extra mile to try to help them choose the right footwear.
What do you love most about Putney?
I love the fact that Putney has such a vibrant local community. Being a specialist in sports means that we are very much part of the strong local sporting community. We are very well connected with many Putney clubs and communities covering a wide range of sports from running through to netball, tennis and rugby. We love being a good local hub for those communities.
Which is the first café/restaurant you’ll be heading to when we are able to socialise again?
Giuliano’s Deli Café for me. I miss their fantastic, authentic homemade pasta dishes. They are our next door neighbours in Putney too, so it couldn’t be more convenient!
Which shop in Putney have you missed visiting during lockdown?
Wilko. It is amazing how much useful stuff they stock and all such great value too.
Describe Putney in three words.
Tell us how people can support your business during lockdown and beyond
We man our phone lines from 10am-5pm, 7 days a week and we have a fully transactional website that has 90% of our products on there. We deliver free of charge (on orders over £50) and we offer a collect service from Putney. We have found that running has become even more popular in lockdown. We keep records of what our customers buy so we can always recommend a good replacement shoe when their old shoes are worn out. We have also helped lots of new runners by gait testing them virtually and offering advice over the phone.
