Positively Putney BID join call for financial support for businesses

We have joined over 100 destinations across the UK and 100,000 retail, hospitality and leisure businesses to urge Government to provide urgent assurances that financial support will be provided to these sectors.

The UK’s hospitality sector is predicting a £4bn hit in festive sales with the new ‘work from home’ directive killing off the UK’s hospitality sector this Christmas. Hospitality bosses believe reintroducing the ‘work from home’ guidance has diminished consumer confidence, resulting in widespread cancellations of bookings during the critical festive trading period.

Our Putney businesses have reported a 25-40% reduction in sales since Plan B was announced. Office parties have been cancelled and people are scared to visit the town centre.

We have joined the call for urgent financial support to soften the blow to Christmas trading by redirecting unspent grants available to the sector or by introducing new alternatives such as a discretionary fund. We have also suggested a business rates reduction must be considered for 2022/2023.

We have briefed local MP Fleur Anderson, and Wandsworth Council Economic Development Office on the issues businesses are facing.

Businesses rely on their December trade to see them through the quiet months of January and February. Without that money they will struggle to survive.
