A Weekend To Remember at Putney’s Cinema Screen

Cinema in July

The weekend of July, 14th to 16th saw Putney play host to an exciting cinema event. Tennis enthusiasts and movie lovers gathered at the outdoor venue in Church Square. Despite rainfall not being on our side at times, hundreds of people visited across the weekend to enjoy the experience.

Something for everyone

The cinema screen event catered to visitors of all ages, ensuring something for everyone across the 3 days. Young children and families gathered to watch Monsters Inc, Secret Life of Pets and a Frozen sing-a-long. The Greatest Showman was shown on Saturday as a bonus movie as we had time to spare until the women’s Wimbledon final.

Wimbledon Tennis

Sunday afternoon proved to be the most popular for the men’s Wimbledon finals. 4 hours and 42 minutes of tennis saw Alcaraz take the trophy to the delight of the attendees winning 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 in a 5 set thriller. The women’s final on Saturday afternoon was also popular which saw Vondrousova beat Jabeur 6-4 6-4.

Come rain or shine

While the event brought lots of people together from the community, the intermittent rain did present some challenges, however, this didn’t stop us from showing the movies and attendees persevered regardless – we used our spare gazebos to shelter visitors where we could.

Stalls across the weekend

Visitors had the opportunity to explore stalls set up across the weekend. Ghost Whale, Putney Pantry, Octagreen, Creams, Glug Wines and Cilantro served an array of food and beverages to enhance the experience. Pip Organic generously provided free drinks which proved popular among cinema goers.

Relaxing in deckchairs

Riverhomes played a role in keeping everyone comfy by providing suitably branded deckchairs. The Love Putney deckchair will be in Church Square for all of August, so make sure you head down for your selfie, and tag us in your social posts.

A big thank you to all the Putney businesses who fund Positively Putney BID which means events such as the cinema screening are made possible.
