Plastic Free Putney

As we come to the end of Plastic-Free July, it’s a great time to celebrate the year-round commitment to sustainability and reducing plastic waste. We had the pleasure of speaking with the owner of Source Bulk Foods Putney, a local gem dedicated to promoting a plastic-free lifestyle. Read on to find out more about their mission, offerings, and impact in the community.

Can you share the story behind the business and its mission?

Source Bulk Foods Putney was born from a strong desire to foster sustainability at a local level. Our mission is to combat single-use plastic packaging by offering practical solutions for reducing waste and promoting healthier eating habits. We’re dedicated to helping the community make environmentally conscious choices every day.

What types of products do you offer, and how do you ensure they are all plastic-free?

We proudly offer a diverse range of over 450 products, all entirely plastic-free. Our selection includes everything from dried fruits and nuts to pasta, locally sourced honey, olive oil, cleaning products, and personal care items. We cater to various dietary preferences, including vegan, paleo, dairy-free, and gluten-friendly options. All our products are available in bulk, allowing customers to use their own containers and avoid plastic packaging altogether.

How do you educate your customers about the benefits of going plastic-free?

Education is a cornerstone of our mission. We continuously share information in-store and on social media, and our registered customers receive a monthly newsletter filled with tips and recommendations on sustainability and plastic-free living. During Plastic-Free July, we run a special campaign with detailed insights into the benefits of reducing plastic use. For instance, we highlight that the average person can save around 45 large pieces and 400g of plastic per year. We’re also thrilled to report that Putney residents have refilled over 5,400 bottles in the past 12 months!

Have you noticed any changes in customer behaviour or attitudes towards plastic-free shopping since you opened?

Yes, there’s been a notable shift. Initially, our customers were predominantly young individuals already committed to sustainability. However, we’re now seeing a broader demographic, with new customers of all ages and backgrounds showing interest in plastic-free shopping.

Are there any misconceptions about plastic-free shopping that you’d like to address?

One common misconception is the cost. While we may not have the buying power of large supermarket chains, our prices for many products, especially those labelled as Savers like oats, rice, and pasta, are competitive or even lower than high street supermarkets. Additionally, around 60% of our products are organic, and we offer these at competitive prices. Shopping with us allows you to buy only what you need, which can also lead to savings.

How do you see the plastic-free movement evolving in the next few years?

The single-use plastic movement is part of a broader shift towards better resource management and frugality. It’s about embracing a “less is more” philosophy that still allows us to enjoy food and life. This evolution reflects a growing awareness of what’s beneficial for both people and the planet in the long term.

What’s the one thing you want people to know about your store and its mission?

I want people to know that Source Bulk Foods Putney is not just a place to shop; it’s a community hub where sustainability meets convenience and enjoyment. Our team is here to assist, provide product knowledge, and make shopping a fun experience. While there’s always room for improvement, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. Our store stands for plastic-free and zero waste, and we aim to be a vibrant part of the local community.

As we wrap up Plastic-Free July, remember that the journey toward reducing plastic use is ongoing. Source Bulk Foods Putney is here to support you every step of the way.
