Artisan’s owners, Magda and Edwin are currently undertaking an epic journey taking a bag of coffee from London to Perth in Australia. They wanted to deepen understanding and explore the culture, people, flavours and experiences that shape the global coffee industry
For those who frequent Artisan Coffee on Upper Richmond Road you will often see Magda and Edwin serving coffee and talking to the customers. They opened in Putney in October 2011, and then opened a further four coffee shops in and around South West London, and a coffee school. In 2025, they transformed a former disused scuba diving centre in Chiswick into a 5,000 square metre roastery where they produce Curious Roo coffee beans.
Magda’s Mum lives in Perth and they thought it would be an amazing experience to drive across the world setting a world record at the same time. Travelling with their three children, homeschooling them on the way, delivering a single bag of Curious Roo beans from the UK to Australia entirely by road and sea. Their converted Mercedes van is serving as both their home and mobile coffee stand for six months, crossing 25 countries and covering 21,699 km.
They are currently 82 days into the adventure and all still talking to each other, but the journey has not been without some unexpected drama.

On their travels they are exploring coffee culture around the world, and their adventure is highlighting how the humble bean is more than a commodity, but a connector of people, stories and places. From traditional European espresso bar counters to Turkish cezves to emerging coffee culture in Kazakhstan they have met roasters, shop owners and growers. As we write they are about half way through the six months and have just entered China.
They are documenting the trip on Instagram and Youtube and it is a daily joy to check in and see what they have been up to, almost feels like you are travelling the world with them! Give them a follow and see how they spend the next 80 days.
Very much looking forward to seeing them back in Putney in September to hear about this amazing trip.
