Putney from a Teens Perspective

When most people think of Putney, rowing boats and riverside walks might be the first things that come to mind. But for me—and many other young people—it’s so much more than that. From events that bring the community together to cool places to shop, eat, and chill with friends, Putney has something for everyone. Here’s my take on why it’s a hidden gem for teenagers like me.

A Buzzing High Street: Shops, Food, and Hidden Gems

Putney’s high street is a great place to hang out, whether you’re meeting up with friends or just browsing the shops. Big-name stores like H&M and Sports Direct make it easy to grab new clothes at great prices. And when it comes to food, you’re never far from a quick bite—McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC are all close by when hunger strikes

But what makes Putney special isn’t just the big brands. It’s the local spots that really stand out. Blabar is an amazing bakery which specialises in great coffee, cinnamon buns and lunch options and is always a safe option where you can find something new you know you will like. And if you’re after budget-friendly fashion with loads of choice, JAKI is a great place to browse.

Where to Chill: From Movie Nights to River Views

When it comes to places to relax, Putney Odeon Luxe is one of my top picks. With super comfy seats and a chilled atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot to watch a movie and escape for a couple of hours. Whether it’s a new release or just something fun.

Plus, the riverside views in Putney are unbeatable. Whether you’re walking with mates or just enjoying some quiet time, there’s something really calming about being near the water. But beware when the tide is high it does flood.

Unmissable Events: Rowing, Cheering & Barbecue Vibe

Putney really comes alive during big rowing events. Boat Race Day is one of my favourites. Teams race from Putney to Mortlake while crowds gather along the embankment, cheering them on. The energy is amazing, and the best part? It’s completely free to watch. Make sure you swing by the 5th Putney Sea Scouts—they do a barbecue on the day that’s honestly one of the best I’ve ever had.

Another top event is the Head of the River Race, where top university teams like Oxford and Cambridge battle it out for the title of “King of the River.” It brings an exciting buzz to the normally peaceful streets and makes for a great day out.

Student Discounts & Smart Savings

As a student, I’m always on the lookout for ways to save, and Putney delivers. Lots of shops offer student discounts, including:

  • Ryman – 10% off with a student card
  • H&M – 10% off for members (and joining is free)
  • Creams Café – Free ice cream when you download their app

If you’re still chasing a bargain, I highly recommend downloading Too Good To Go. It’s an app that helps cut food waste and gives you cheap deals on unsold food from local places toward the end of the day. It’s perfect for grabbing a surprise treat without spending too much. And many of the businesses in putney frequently upload great deals!

Easy Travel Links

One of the best things about Putney is how easy it is to get to and from. Putney Station and East Putney Underground connect you straight to central London, so even if you’re just visiting, it’s super convenient. Buses and riverboats also run regularly, making it a great hub for exploring the rest of the city—or just getting home after a long day out.

As a 17-year-old living in Putney, I feel lucky to have so many sports opportunities around me. Rowing is a big part of life here—clubs like Putney Town welcome junior rowers of all levels, from complete beginners to competitive squads. At school, many of us start rowing from Year 8, with both social and performance crews training regularly on the river. Tennis is just as accessible. Leader’s Gardens has three public courts you can book through All Star Tennis, and they run relaxed sessions like “Net Socials,” which are a great way to meet people and improve your game. Most weekends for me are a mix of early rows, tennis matches, and spending time with friends—it’s a great balance of sport and social life.

Putney’s got everything you need as a teen—great shops, chilled nice spots by the river, and loads of sports like rowing and tennis. There’s always something going on, from big events like the Boat Race to late-night cinema trips with mates. With student discounts, easy travel, and a real community feel, it’s honestly one of the best places to be at 17.
