Amazing August: Putney Came Alive

Putney was vibrant and buzzing this August. For 31 days our town centre was bursting with colour, creativity and community spirit as Amazing August took over. With 54 free or sponsored events hosted by 50 of our brilliant local businesses, the programme transformed what is usually a quiet month into a celebration of everything that makes Putney special. For a reminder of the events click here.

On the first day, families flocked to Ben & Lola for balloon modelling, leaving with smiles, colourful creations and a little extra shopping in hand. At Pitter Potter, little artists got stuck into painting while Abie’s Nails offered kids’ manicures in a sell-out success. Anytime Fitness offered a fun kid and parent circuit session. The over subscribed owl workshop at Putney Library where young ones delighted in meeting and holding the majestic birds.

Families loved exploring Putney through the week-long Pip Organic Trail, starting at Waitrose who generously offered refreshments and stopping at local favourites along the way concluding with a PIP organic goodie bag kindly provided by Pip Organic whose HQ is based in Putney.

Events were not just for kids. Hot Pod Yoga and Phoenix Yoga sold out their sessions before the month even began, welcoming new and experienced yogis. Our town centre became a stage as performers brought the magic of Elixir of Love to the streets in a show-stopping moment of opera in Putney Library, Waterstones and Spotted Horse. Tsuki Ramen’s mochi-making workshop was a delicious hit, with young couples rolling and shaping their ganache filled mochis. The fun stretched across all of Putney including networking in Costa Coffee, live music at Bricklayers Arms, board games in the air conditioned Prince of Wales pub on the hottest day of the year and Scrappy Eats at Home SW15. For teens, Putney Arts Theatre made culture more accessible than ever with £5 theatre tickets, to the Curious Incidents of the Dog at Night Time.

Businesses enjoyed being part of Amazing August and have reported how valuable these events were. Some saw direct sales and an estimated 85% felt they attracted new customers into their business. 100% of businesses have said they would like to take part if we did something similar again.

Amazing August reminded us what happens when a community comes together. Residents, visitors and businesses all played their part in creating a month to remember. From lego days to pizza-making, quiz nights to boozy brunches, Putney became a playground of discovery. Thank you for making August in Putney truly amazing.
